In a WORKSHOP you will stress 1 keystone that is currently the biggest opportunity for the swimmer. Explain the purpose of the workshop noting that it is the second step (Fix It) in our developmental process and meant to help the swimmer do the skill correctly at a higher heart rate that will be necessary for them to Cement It in practice. This session is led by the consultant but more of the responsibility for noticing and adjusting the skill should be placed on the swimmer so they can start coaching themselves in practice. Help the swimmer have as high structure as possible in this session as they will lose some when their HR is under more stress in practice.
Overall Ideas Running Through the Session
*Time = # Strokes x Rate. Taking fewer strokes is the first step to faster swimming.
*Insist on focus and very heavy structure which they should try to hold under HR pressure.
*Give them the tools to coach themselves.
Prior to Workshop
*Review what you will be teaching in the class. This class is based on the last Event Summary Form in OnForm.
*Prepare what you will need for the clinic prior to the class – iPad, forms, pen, stopwatch, equipment, etc.
On deck prior to pool (5 – 7 minutes)
*Greetings and explain what will be covered in class.
*Continuing swimmers: Review book homework and ask how the swimmer did cementing the assigned skill.
*Explain the purpose of a workshop and if you know the skill that you will be working on, why it is important and how it will help the swimmer swim faster.
In pool (46 – 50 minutes)
*100 yard warm up – slow / no fly
*Have the swimmer do 50 yards of the stroke while you determine the 3 – 5 opportunities.
*Prioritize the importance of each opportunity and pick the biggest one that you will work on today.
*Use the book and avatar to remind the swimmer what the target is and why it is important.
*Make adjustments to the stroke. T3 – use videos of the swimmer.
*Have the swimmer coach themselves through the conversion from sight to feeling in 5 x 25’s.
1 x 25 Guiding the skill with the eyes.
3 x 25 Guiding with the eyes and marking with tensity.
1 x 25 Using tensity without looking.
*First challenge – 3 x 25 (+5 seconds) any speed holding the skill
*Play a game – explain the rules and conduct the game from the FM Workshop – Fix It form
On deck after getting out of the pool (5 - 7 minutes)
*Fill out Event Summary Form and FM Effort Chart - review information and ask the swimmer questions
*Assign homework in the book and 1 Keystone opportunity to cement in practice.
*Take a picture of the ESF / Effort Chart and import it into the OnForm account and share with “Everyone”.
*T3 – show the parent a video demonstrating what was being worked on and why.
Total time – 1 hour
Post clinic (within 48 hours)
*Submit for pay
*T3 – create a video analysis through OnForm and share to “Everyone”
